As part of our ongoing outreach to schools and teachers, ACTF Education recently presented a series of professional learning workshops at ATOM Queensland’s 2019 State Conference, In Focus.

Held at Bond University on the Gold Coast, this year’s ATOM Queensland State Conference featured a range of engaging workshops presented by practising media teachers and media industry professionals. The opening day keynote speech by Leroy Button – a 21-year old drone director who works on blockbuster feature films – was a fantastic way to start the conference, illustrating the importance of creating industry pathways for passionate students.

Participants in ACTF workshops included teachers from all levels of primary and secondary schooling, and representatives from arts and education organisations including the Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts (HOTA) and Western Australia’s School Curriculum and Standard’s Authority. In our three workshops, we focussed on using quality children’s content in the teaching of Media Arts understandings and skills.

For primary teachers, we showcased a range of content relevant to English, HASS, and Health and Physical Education, including Summer’s Day, First Day (2017), and Woven Threads. We also shared case studies from schools who have used ACTF resources to develop students’ storytelling and filmmaking skills, including our My Place Short Story Competition and the Little Lunch App Competition.

The workshops were extremely valuable for our team, and we were thrilled with the positive feedback we received from participants over both days. Thank you to all the dedicated teachers who came along to our workshops and thank you to ATOM Queensland for hosting us.
